Shopify's Daily Variant Creation Limit (50,000+ Variants)

Once your Shopify store reaches 50,000 or more variants, Shopify limits new variant uploads to 1,000 per day. This article explains how SupplyMaster handles it automatically and what your options are.

This is a Shopify platform limit, not a SupplyMaster limit. It applies to every method of creating variants on a Shopify store — SupplyMaster, other apps, CSV imports, and direct API calls. Shopify Plus stores are exempt.


The Rule

  • Trigger — your Shopify store has 50,000 or more total variants (counted across all products, not just SupplyMaster).

  • Daily cap1,000 new variants per day can be created through apps or CSV import.

  • Applies to — every method of variant creation: SupplyMaster syncs, other apps, CSV uploads, and the Shopify Admin API.

  • ExemptShopify Plus stores. The daily cap does not apply on Plus.

How SupplyMaster Handles It

When your store hits the daily cap during a sync, SupplyMaster stops creating new variants for the rest of the day and records the message in Sync History:

Everything else continues to work normally:

  • Existing products keep syncing — inventory, pricing, and field updates run unaffected.

  • Order sync is unaffected.

  • The next scheduled sync automatically picks up where it left off and creates the next batch of new variants.

What to Expect for Large Catalogs

At 1,000 new variants per day, you can add roughly 30,000 variants per month. Merchants regularly scale their stores to 100,000+ variants over a few months using SupplyMaster’s automatic daily syncing.

These are approximations — actual progress depends on how many new variants Shopify accepts before the daily cap kicks in and whether any other apps or CSV imports also consume the daily quota.


Options to Speed Things Up

  1. Tighten your supplier filters — skip variants you don’t plan to sell (for example, exclude oversized sizes, niche colors, or low-volume styles). Fewer variants means you reach a complete catalog faster. See How to Filter Products for Import.

  2. Delete unused Shopify products — if your store drops back below 50,000 total variants, Shopify lifts the daily cap automatically.

  3. Upgrade to Shopify Plus — Plus stores are not subject to the daily cap and can create unlimited variants per day.


How to Tell If This Is What You’re Hitting

All of the following are usually true when this limit is the cause:

  • Your Shopify store has 50,000 or more total variants.

  • You are not on Shopify Plus.

  • Sync History shows the message “Shopify’s variant creation limit reached …”.

  • Imports stop after roughly the same number of new variants each day and resume the following day.

You can confirm your store-wide variant count in your Shopify Admin or by adding up variants across products.

I’m on Shopify Plus but Still See the Limit

In rare cases Shopify reports a Plus store as non-Plus to apps, which causes the daily cap to appear even though it shouldn’t. If this happens to you:

  1. Confirm your Shopify Plus subscription in your Shopify Admin.

  2. Take a screenshot of your Plus plan details.

  3. Contact SupplyMaster support — we can correct the plan detection on our end.
